Advancing Sustainable Adhesives and Sealants for Decarbonizing the Built Environment

The incorporation of bio-based polymers into waterborne acrylic adhesive and sealant formulations contributes significantly to decarbonizing the built environment by reducing dependence on traditional materials derived from fossil fuels, but they must maintain high-performance standards. In this study, several new monomers from renewable origins were copolymerized with acrylic monomers to produce waterborne emulsion polymers. When these polymers were formulated into their corresponding adhesive and sealant formulations, it was demonstrated that they meet key ASTM and ISO performance standards while incorporating target bio-based content levels of 25% or higher that align with USDA BioPreferred® guidelines.

Opportunities to Increase Sustainable Materials Development in the Building and Construction Industry

While the Adhesives and Sealants industry has committed to improving sustainable materials development, the industry has not yet fully realized the adoption of lower carbon footprint offerings. Moreover, there is not a consistent answer to the question of “What is Sustainability”.
Emerging topics such as LEED v5 and focus on embodied carbon as value drivers further complicate the picture and are pressuring firms in the construction value chain to take action in order to satisfy the demands of myriad stakeholders. We have recently worked with a leading business school program to understand more clearly how to address these topics and to subsequently illustrate approaches to construction material end-users that show the importance and benefits of choosing sustainable products.

ETCC 2024 - CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Understanding and improving the water resistance of waterborne binders

Innovation in architectural coatings for exterior walls and wood applications is currently led by low VOC and durable solutions in order to tend to more sustainability. Waterborne acrylic is one of the preferred technology to reach this market’s need.
Among UV resistance, hardness and dirt pick up resistance, water resistance is one of the most challenging requirement to achieve. Indeed, exterior substrates are subjected to severe weather along there life, leading to whitening, blistering, surfactant leaching, etc.
Based on the specifications of the paint formulators, Arkema has developed specific and complementary tests to characterize this property. Our teams have studied the link between our acrylic dispersion’s compositions and their water resistance in order to optimise our new solutions.
In this conference, after discussing the different tests and their meaning in term of behaviour toward water exposure, we will present the key parameters for improving our acrylic binders.

Waterborne alkyd emulsion, a solution to decarbonize wall, wood and metal decorative paints

Consumer expectations for efficient home and indoor well-being include health, protection, durability, and user-friendly application with minimal environmental impact.
This results in lower odor, easy formulation with waterborne additives, and a lower environmental footprint.
As resin technologies advance toward bio-based materials and lower carbon footprints, Arkema leads in developing waterborne technologies with bio-based raw materials and low carbon feedstock.
This innovation aligns with sustainability goals, enhancing paint performance by reducing hazardous substances, minimizing the carbon footprint by using low carbon feedstock in decorative paints for walls, wood, and metal applications.

How to enhance paint properties with our latest innovations on polyurethane thickeners

Arkema Rheology & Specialty Additives, a leader in polyurethane thickeners, continues its commitment to innovation in the paints and coatings markets.
This presentation will showcase our two latest developments in this field.
First, in order to improve film build and leveling without impacting the in-can appearance and low shear viscosity, the Coapur™ XS 12, a pure Newtonian HEUR thickener, uniquely enhances high shear viscosities. It is a new tool showing also very good compatibility and rheology response with all types of binders.
Second, Coapur™ XS 83 will provide a very pseudoplastic behaviour with a strong shear-thinning profile. As a consequence it is a tremendous polyurethane thickener to improve sag resistance with a superior color acceptance. This new thickeners has proven its efficiency and suitability in both decorative and industrial coatings. These sustainable additives are powerfully enriching the toolbox of paints and coatings formulators.
